THE LATEST BOOK BY MATT SEATTLE

The Border Piper – Matt Seattle

The Border Piper is a vibrant collection of tunes by acclaimed piper, composer, and traditional music scholar Matt Seattle. Bringing together a wealth of musical inspiration, the book features primarily new compositions, alongside a selection of archived favourites rediscovered from the author’s earlier work.

Among the highlights is “(Tom) McConville’s Return (to Newcastle)”, a slow air written by Matt in 1986 and later rediscovered after being long forgotten in his archives. Its reappearance in this collection offers players a glimpse into an earlier chapter of Seattle’s composing life while adding a contemplative melody to the repertoire.

The collection’s centrepiece is the expansive title tune, “The Border Piper.” Written in tribute to Thomas Scott of Monklaw, uncle of Sir Walter Scott, the piece unfolds as an ambitious three-page musical suite. It begins with a flowing 3/2 hornpipe, moves seamlessly into a slip jig, and concludes with a driving reel, creating a rich and dynamic journey through traditional dance forms.

Celebrating the spirit and heritage of Border piping, The Border Piper offers an engaging repertoire for musicians who appreciate thoughtful composition rooted in tradition. Whether you are expanding your session repertoire or exploring new material inspired by the Borders’ musical legacy, this collection provides distinctive tunes with character and depth.
